WHAT YOUR CHOICE OF JACKET SAYS ABOUT YOU

Michael Burton

Sometimes the greatest challenge we face when selecting our wardrobe is not how the clothes look but how they represent us as an individual.

In this sense, I believe that the most important part of any outfit is, contrary to popular belief, actually the jacket. For years people have spent hours pondering what type of shoe best relfects their mood or which hat says most about their personality. The reality is that it's the item that's most commonly ignored that will make the biggest statement about you.

The jacket is universal. Winter, Summer, Spring or Autumn. It doesn't matter. There's a jacket for every occasion meaning that you'll never find yourself in a situation where one won't suffice.

Material is important, as with any item of clothing. Whether you want the menacing vibe that comes with leather or the relaxed look of denim your choice of material is key. This can make or break the entire look that you've built and more often than not be a deciding factor in peoples first impressions of you. After all the jacket will be seen before anything else.

Your choice of colour is also going to be a critical factor in determining the message that the jacket is going to give. It's easy to forget that this is the centrepiece of your entire outfit and the wrong colour could prove disastrous. Remember to use colours that define you but at the same time recognise the way that it compliments the rest of your outfit. A clash of colours is a bigger threat for a jacket than anything else and, when chosen incorrectly, can severely disrupt the flow of the outfit.

One final element of the jacket that cannot be ignored is the design. It is not unwise to think that the shape is the first thing that people will notice. Symmetry is usually a safe bet, unless you're going for a bohemian look. The placement and size of zips and buttons may seem trivial however they are anything but. These little yet important touches can make all the difference in the way the jacket presents you to anyone who will see it.

The seemingly microscopic changes may appear insignificant but when chosen well you can let the jacket do all the talking for you.
